New Buzz at Lewsekett Apiary: Kirky The Beekeeper Installs a Nucleus Hive
This week, Kirky The Beekeeper brought new life to Lewsekett Apiary with the installation of a fresh nucleus hive, or nuc. For Del Kirkland—better known as Kirky The Beekeeper—this is one of the most exciting parts of beekeeping: introducing new bees to the apiary and watching a colony take root and thrive.
A nucleus hive is a small, starter colony that includes a queen, workers, and brood—everything needed to grow into a strong, productive hive. With steady hands and a deep respect for the bees, Kirky placed the nuc into its new home, ensuring the colony had a safe, healthy start. “This is what I love most,” Kirky shared. “Each new hive is a step toward supporting pollinators, protecting the environment, and keeping the honeybee population going strong.”
Kirky’s passion for beekeeping runs deep. As a retired Army veteran and active member of the local beekeeping community, he’s dedicated to doing his part in saving honeybees and educating others about their importance.
With each new hive, Lewsekett Apiary grows—and so does Kirky’s mission to preserve, protect, and share the beauty of beekeeping with the Williamsburg community.
